we spent some time making holiday crafts in my basement, and then headed to the creative arts studio downtown for some glass fusing/slumping. though technically glass "fusing" is the act of heating the glass concoction in a kiln until it melts to various degrees, and slumping is the act of subsequently placing that new glass "piece" over a mold, and heating it enough until it melts and takes the shape of said mold. we simply created our pieces to be fused/slumped, all the while enjoying a variety of snacks.

i ended up with a black base (piece of glass) - and in order to create the effect that i wanted, i needed a total of 4 layers (base plus 3 pieces stacked on top). i wasn't sure if 4 or 5 was the threshold, so i asked "dude" at the art studio. he went off to ask a co-worker who teaches the glass slumping class. upon his return, he proclaimed that "4 layers is an exceptionally bad idea." i was like, um, what? in my obstinacy i immediately dismissed his sentiment (and his co-worker's) as i recalled from the class that the limit was at least 4 layers. then meg and lo checked their pictures of glass creations being used for inspiration, pieces which clearly included 4 layers in some places. so we all decided that 4 was an excellent idea. i even gave him the chance to redeem himself - i asked if the "base" counted as a layer - he confirmed, hence further decaying his credibility. my girls and i went on with my exceptionally bad idea and we're thinking they'll turn out just fine!!

this is what i came up with - kevin thinks it looks 80's - i was just going for something obnoxiously abstract.
after spending nearly 4 hours playing with glass, kevin picked us up (he was taxi driver and chef all in the same day!!!) and we finally enjoyed the fabulous cake that nina so graciously made for the event! she's an excellent baker - tasty and aesthetically pleasing!!!! jess made home made gelato to accompany the cake! (likely inspired by our many excursions for gelato while in italy hehe) :-)

a few of us got together this evening for pottery night, as usual. i was glazing my remaining pieces before the firing i plan to have this weekend, when i began to shake a jar of glaze, only to find that the lid wasn't on. it splattered EVERYWHERE!!! paris got it in the face! luckily jess ran to her rescue because i stood there completely dumbfounded - it was all over me, all over everything!!! H-I-L-arious!!! what a friggin mess!!! that gave us quite a laugh... an extended laugh :) only been 31 for a week and i'm already feeble-minded.
anyway, other than that, paris peed on the stairs - she's five and a half years old, so this is not a normal occurrence - poor thing!! she gets sort of neglected on pottery nights - no walks or anything usually - guess i assumed that kev let her out as usual when he's home before band, and he probably thought i'd let her out hehe.
